Why I'm returning to astrology

astrology Apr 07, 2025

About five years ago, I shared here that I would be pulling back on my astrology writings.

At the time, I had recently finished a contract as a horoscope writer for a national magazine. The magazine was in flux (it has since folded, like many other media outlets) and it felt like the right time to step back and think about where I wanted to put my energy next.

I was also having a lot of mixed feelings about astrology. I often shared astrological insights here in my newsletter, which I loved writing.

Astrology was also booming in popularity at the time. Which seemed like a good moment to be writing about it, right?

The problem was that I was noticing a lot of anxiety coming through my client roster. I was offering 1:1 astrological consultations at the time – something else I loved doing – but more and more I was seeing a lot of fear come through the door.

A lot of people were seeking out astrology readings to gain a deeper understanding of their charts. Often, the fear they were bringing was coming through things they had heard or read elsewhere online.

People were worried that their charts were “bad” and that they would always be “stuck” with troubled relationships, failed career attempts, or indecision about what to do with their lives.

Astrology is often talked about as something that is meant to inform and empower, but it felt like it was having the opposite effect.

And even though I worked to remind people that they are more than their charts, and more than their sun signs and other placements, it was a hard argument to win against the anxiety that some clients were feeling.

And that anxiety was something I wanted to sit with.

I had a lot of questions at the time, and even wrote through some of these thoughts in other blogs and essays.

What if astrology is causing more harm than good for some people?

What if my work in astrology isn’t making the kind of impact I want it to?

I was also busy with my tarot work, and tarot felt so fluid, free, and intuitive. It wasn’t stirring up the same kind of fears that I was seeing come about in astrology.

So I took a step back – a big step. I paused my astrology practice. I put more energy into tarot.

I didn’t stop believing in astrology, though. And I didn’t push it out of my life. It just became a part of my private spiritual practice rather than a public one.

I wasn’t sure if, or when, I would return to my work as an astrologer.

But I kept in touch with it by continuing to follow my own transits. I enrolled in a couple of courses with astrologers I looked up to, wanting to sustain my passion for it.

As time went on, I had to admit I missed it.

When you follow astrology over a long period of time, you really see how embodied it is. How it teaches us about the way our lives unfold gradually, and organically, as the years go on.

And you see why we can’t expect to find ourselves in a chart immediately, and why we can’t expect to find our life’s purpose on an astrology app or on a blog.

These are things that are still there to be uncovered and shaped by our own hands.

Astrology just helps us to see some of the materials we have to work with.

Like tarot, astrology is a form of divination, an oracle we can consult. And I think that’s something that is often missing in a lot astrological conversations online: It’s not about waiting for something, or someone, to tell you who you are.

Instead, it’s about bringing your questions to the cosmos and diving for an answer within the heavens.

I’ve missed the conversations I used to have with my astrology clients. I’ve missed the opportunity to give someone a different perspective on astrology – one that wasn’t intended stir fears of a fixed reality, but instead show the relationship we each have with the universe.

And I missed writing about it.

And so, after a long hiatus, and a lot of reflection, I’ve decided to make a slow return to astrology. My tarot work won’t go anywhere – they will coexist together, as they did before.

You might see me writing a bit more about astrology here, intermixed with my takes on tarot.

And you can continue to work with me for tarot consultations, as well as astrological ones. And if you are an artist, I have a special astrology reading designed for creativity.

Hope to see you for a reading sometime soon.

Thanks, as always, for being here.

Until next time,

Liz
