When I first started reading tarot for other people, I was actually surprised at how many wanted to know about love.
I thought I would be answering different types of questions about spiritual journeys and personal transformations.
But I quickly realized how important relationships are to people, and how much is at stake when we are talking about love, commitment, loyalty and companionship.
Some of the hardest questions Iâve had to answer as a tarot reader had to do with relationships.
They can be really complicated. Especially if the people involved are cycling through a range of emotions: One day theyâre on, another theyâre off.
Divining a clear answer about a relationship is not always easy to pin down when the people in question canât be pinned down in the first place.
Another challenge can arise when clients are impatient about the answer: They feel like theyâve already been waiting âlong enoughâ for love and they donât want to hear that this is not their year â again.
Ever...
The other day I got an email from one of my students:
âLiz, Iâve heard you say that you donât need to be psychic to read tarot. And I donât disagree, because I donât consider myself psychic and Iâve definitely been improving in my readings lately because Iâve been following your instructions on how to actually read my cards. But at what point does tarot become an intuitive practice, too? I keep expecting my intuition to kick in, but I donât know how or when that will happen.â
I love this question, because it highlights the mainstream context of tarot â that it is a psychic tool â and opposes it against the reality of cartomancy â that you need to learn to read the cards if you want to make them talk.
I also consider âpsychicâ to be a loaded word. Not because I have anything against it, but because the mainstream perceptions â the Hollywood stereotypes of psychic ability â has created unrealistic and uneven expectations about what âpsychicâ work is really about.
There is a false belie...
When I ask people why they want to read tarot, the Number One reason I hear is, âI want to develop my intuition.â
So many of us want to experience trust and alignment within ourselves, and the universe. And tarot can be an amazing way to open up to that.
But there is a lot of confusion about intuition and psychic ability out there. These are concepts that we need to develop with discernment, responsibility, and groundedness if we really want to embrace them in our lives.
This goes for whether you read tarot or not â intuition is not reliant on divination.
There is no shortage of psychic advice out there in cyberspace these days. Take a scroll on Instagram and youâll likely come across posts encouraging you to trust your psychic skills and cut off those âlow-vibeâ friends. Or memes that remind you that your intuition is never wrong. Â
But â and this a big but â the problem with that is that itâs really easy to confuse other emotions, ego, and leaky boundaries as intuition instead....
People are often attracted to esoteric practices like tarot because they want to know the fastest way to get from A to B.
And the occult seems to promise short cuts and hacks to fast-track your success.
While I donât think it hurts to throw in a little bit of magic into your life now and again, itâs important to remember that spells, prayers, meditations and affirmations can only get you so far.
If you donât have the right attitude, mindset, or structure in place in your life to hold onto what you want to create, then all the magic in the world wonât save you.
This is a big mistake I see tarot readers make when they are trying to build their skills.
Whether youâre brand new to tarot, or youâve been studying for years, if youâre relying too much on the âwooâ to do the work for you, then you might not be seeing the progress you want.
There are three things I think everyone needs to nail if they want to get good at reading tarot â especially if you want to read cards for other peopl...
Happy New Year!
I hope you are doing well, all things considered.
Thank you so much for joining me here. Iâm excited to start the New Year off with you!
What intentions, hopes, dreams, and changes are you bringing with you into 2021?
Personally, Iâm bringing in a few new and old plans: Iâm going to take clarinet lessons, for one.
Two, Iâm bringing back my annual resolution to read all the un-read books I have at home before buying new ones. (Itâs the third year in a row Iâm setting this resolution â letâs see if I can keep it this time around.)
There are also a few spiritual trends and beliefs that I would be happy to see disappear in 2021:
1. The belief that tarot readers, energy healers and other intuitive workers shouldnât charge for their âgifts.â This idea only serves people who donât believe in paying someone for their labour.
Energetic and intuitive work are skills like any other, and many people who run service-based businesses have invested a lot of time and money into...
A couple of blogs ago, I shared why Iâm no longer talking about astrology here as much I used to.
(You can read it here if you missed it.)
I didnât come to that decision quickly, or easily.
When you put years into something, it can feel disorienting to realize you donât feel the same way about it as you used to. Given that astrology is part of my spiritual practice, it was a decision that went beyond just a newsletter.
For a while, I questioned myself:
Do I not believe in astrology anymore?
Do I not think itâs important?
Do I not want other people to discover it and see it the way I do?
I do believe in astrology, and I do think itâs important. But I want to have a different relationship with it now.
And to do that, I need to take a bit of a step back from working with it so publicly.
This isnât an easy thing to do these days, with our lives so out in the open online.
This is a reflection of what happens when spiritual practices evolve. Our relationships to our spirituality, ...
This year, many tarot readers have transitioned online in response to pandemic regulations and health precautions.
Which has left many people wondering, "Do tarot readings still âworkâ over the phone or online?âÂ
The short answer is: OF COURSE!Â
I have been doing readings on Zoom since 2015 and let me tell you: Where or how your reading is delivered has no bearing on its accuracy or effectiveness.
Not only do I know this from my job as a reader, but also as a client. Most of the readers and intuitives I have worked with have been by distance.
When booking a reading, remember:
âŚď¸A readerâs skill is what matters - and that has nothing to do with the vehicle you are using to commutate with them;
âŚď¸ Distance readings make it possible to work with people all over the world, so you are not limited by geography when it comes to choice;
âŚď¸ You donât have to touch or physically choose your tarot cards for them to âworkâ for you. Readers have been working by phone, email, and Skype LONG before the pande...
If youâve been following me for a while now, you might have noticed I havenât been writing about astrology as much I used to.
I started this newsletter over five years ago as a place to talk about tarot cards and lunar cycles. It didnât begin as a weekly mailing, but eventually it grew to that.
Along the way, I began to expand to write about more than the moon. Eventually, my newsletter grew to share weekly astrological updates.
But throughout that time, I started to lose one of my original intentions: tarot.
Throughout this last year, Iâve felt limited by astrology. Not by the practice itself, but by the pressure to keep up the astrological conversation here week after week.
Astrology is fascinating, but itâs always changing: Our universe is in constant motion. Writing about astrology requires timeliness, as its relevance can come and go in a matter of days, weeks, or months.
As a writer, this is frustrating. I was starting to feel like some of my work was disposable, quickly re...
It is my belief that tarot is for everyone, and that it can be beneficial in many situations when used appropriately.
Like any tool, it will only work she applied with the proper skill and intention.
If you are getting a tarot reading, your emotional and intellectual perspective will also play a role in how that reading goes. Itâs important to be in an open state of mind, ready to receive information.
I have had clients in the past who were clearly not ready for tarot and sometimes, I have had to cut sessions short because querents were so nervous or scared.
As a tarot reader, I wonât always know where you are at emotionally when you book an appointment. It is up to you to know whether you are ready and willing to give tarot a try.
Here are 3 signs you might not be ready for a reading:
1. You have immense guilt about it, to the point where you canât enjoy your reading. I once had a client break down in tears because they felt like they were going against their religion by seeing me. (Side...
If youâve spent any time at all following new age practitioners, youâve likely heard the phrase, âGo with what resonates with you.â
This saying permeates new age spiritual culture of all kinds: It shows up in tarot workshops and healing sessions. You see it in books and hear it on YouTube channels.
Itâs meant to be taken as guidance or advice to help a student or client figure out what their next step is. Sometimes, itâs given during times of confusion, as though to say, âJust go with what you feel.â
Confusion itself doesnât get us very far, does it? When youâre not sure whether youâre coming or going, and youâre unclear as to whether youâre supposed to do this or that, things can go one of two ways:
You stay stuck and keep repeating the same old patterns, knowing you need to take different actions but youâre not sure what they are, orâŚ
You act on emotion, impulse, or intuition and hope for the bestâŚeven if the action youâre taking is a stab in the dark and youâre unsure whethe...
